We are pleased to report the continued success of our four-decade tradition of recognizing young students serving their school community with dedication. Grounded in the old saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”, our awards program is a joint effort between our Club, teachers and a local business.
Starting with our 2018-19 international theme, “We serve the world and our local communities with pride, compassion and kindness….To reach beyond our limits we must reach within our clubs, communities and selves.” our club encouraged students to look beyond the here and now and look for opportunities for self-improvement and with greater knowledge and understanding to improve their communities.
Teachers then select one student from their rooms for best meeting that criteria and provided information about the child’s reading level, grade level and reading interests. Our book supplier, Audrey’s Books, used that information to pick the “perfect” book for that child. The loop is closed when some of our members attend the year-end assemblies to speak about community service and how ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
With few exceptions, even with the proliferation of digital media, we have awarded books every year since the Award’s inception. It continues to be our belief that the printed word is a long-lasting reminder that literacy leads to individual success now and in the years to come.
Additionally, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International, the Edmonton Chinese Lions Club selected a total of 18 coffee table-quality books of different reading levels and presented them to the school libraries for students and staff alike to share. With these richly illustrated references we hope to inspire students to think about the wonders of our fragile planet and the need to preserve ecosystems for future generations.
